Unusual Uses for Coffee Grounds

If you're a big coffee drinker, like me, you have lots of coffee grounds to throw away. But there's other uses for them, too. Here are some helpful ones:

For the home - -

-Toss some in the fireplace if you like the smell, and cleaning out the ashes will be easier. Or, you can put them in a cold fireplace to help keep the ashes from fogging when you sweep them out.

-Mix a little warm water and vinegar with coffee grounds and use a cotton swab to apply to scratched furniture. Let set and then wipe off

-Place in an open container in the refrigerator or freezer to absorb odors

-Add a few teaspoons when scrubbing baked on grime from pots or pans

-Use in garbage disposals to clean

-Use with hot water and a little dish liquid to unclog slow drains

For the garden -

-Add to garden to attract earthworms

-Add to soil to enhance organic material, and coffee grounds contain micro-organisms that aid in plant growth

-Put in compost pile to add nitrogen

-Spread around an area to deter pests like ants. snails, and slugs. Some say it will also keep cats away

-Use as a fertilizer for acid loving plants, such as hydrangeas, rhodendrons, camillas, or roses

-Plant carrots or radishes with coffee grounds mixed into their soil. They love it and will grow larger

-Use in vases of cut flowers. It will help steady the stems and make the flowers last longer

For the skin -

-Mix olive or coconut oil into coffee grounds to make a paste for a facial. It will help tighten skin and relieve puffiness

-Use to scrub away rough skin, especially on the feet

-Mix with oil and use to exfoliate the skin during a bath

Other uses -

-Marinate meat in coffee grounds then rinse to tenderize

-Soak in water to make a stain for baskets, antiquing paper, or dying cloth

Empty coffee cans make good storage containers for coffee grounds, but, if you plan to keep them for a long time, you will need to let them dry first. I throw old ones away when I start a new container. Now go use those coffee grounds.
