Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe rests on the Nevada - California border and is fascinating in more ways than one. First of all, it's known for its scenic beauty, great photo opportunities, and panoramic mountains on all sides. It's also famous for crystal, clear water that reflects the blue sky. More than 75% of the lake's watershed is in national forests, adding to its surrounding beauty.

The lake formed more than two million years ago, during the Ice Age. It is the largest freshwater lake in the U.S. Sierra Nevada range and the largest alpine lake in North America. It is 1,645 feet deep, making it the second deepest in the United States. Only Crater Lake is deeper. It's surface elevation is 6,225 feet above sea level, and it has more water volume than any except the Great Lakes.

Today Lake Tahoe is a major, all-year-round tourist attraction. There's summer recreational activities and attraction, as well as winter skiing, snowboarding, and other outdoor activities. The Nevada side also includes several large casinos. Of course, the area is filled with motels and hotels, houses and lodges for rent, restaurants, shops, etc. that cater to the tourist business. It is definitely a place worth seeing.
