Cover Design for Uprooted by War

Uprooted by War has finally gone to the graphic artist at my publishing house. The process has seemed very slow this time, but I think my patience needs some work. Hannah sent me three preliminary views for book cover concepts.

Two of them have close-up clips of a Union officer's gloved hands holding a sword. In the novel, however, Luke isn't an officer, and I don't think the photo is appealing enough. The last one has the photo of a soldier, but he is Confederate, which can't be Luke either. In addition, the soldier has a pinched face and has lighter hair and complexion than Luke, who is one-fourth Cherokee.

I've also looked at possible Civil War graphics, and there's not as many as I expected. To find one that goes with a particular character makes the task even more daunting. I sent Hannah some images I thought would work better. The one that shows a Union soldier isn't quite as handsome as I envision Luke and has a fuller face. It's also a black and white photo - not the best option for a cover, which needs color in my opinion. We'll see what Hannah thinks.

I'm not even sure she can use any of what I pulled. However, I wasn't exactly satisfied with the photos of Emma on Cleared for Planting or Leah on Sown in Dark Soil at first either. We went with the best we could find, and they turned out just fine. I trust Hannah's work and feel sure the cover of Uprooted by War will too. I can't wait for the cover reveal. We're getting close.
